Making work Easier, Safer and Smarter

It has been more than a year since Singapore went into circuit breaker. We have now emerged stronger and recovered tremendously through the resilience of Singaporean companies and its people. Through all the doom and gloom, the pandemic has also seen some positives, with a shift in how consumers shop. More consumers today are shopping online, even for bigger purchases. With an increase in sales coming from online platforms, companies need to adapt and thrive, introducing new ways to make work easier, safer and smarter.

One such company that has done so is Cozy Bedding (Private) Ltd, a leading bedding specialist that was established in 2015, distributing premium brands such as Slumberland, King Koil and Vono. The company provides a one-stop solution for bedding needs, provides consultancy services, quality mattresses, customized bed frames, and delivery services.

To achieve sustainable and organic growth, the company has been expanding, focusing its efforts on improving productivity. With the support of NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), the company embarked on a year long WorkPro Job Redesign project, investing in the digitalisation of its warehouse, ultimately making the job easier for older staff.

Before the system was implemented, workers had to hand carry goods while climbing a ladder to place or retrieve items on higher racks which presented a high risk for falling. Older workers who were unable to carry heavy loads had to wait for their colleagues to assist them, resulting in a loss of productivity. Moreover, inadequate lighting conditions due to the high ceiling and blockage by existing racking added to the strain on older workers tasked with the sorting, labelling and packing of products.

The company purchased and installed a customised storage racking mezzanine system with warehouse goods lift for their warehouse facility. This allowed storage space to be maximised, and created space for workers to sort, label and pack goods in a tidy and organised environment. Lights were also installed beneath the new mezzanine racking to help older workers to see clearly while sorting, labelling and packing goods.

Racking height was split between the floor and mezzanine level so that goods can be easily reached without using a high ladder, thereby eliminating the falling risk of older workers. The goods lift also helped reduce manual labour, aiding older workers to organise and locate goods with ease. This helped the business expedite the delivery process, keeping customers satisfied.

All in all, the project helped increase product turnover per quarter by close to 40%, and established time savings of about 50%. The project also increased staff’s morale and created a more conducive work environment. Cozy Bedding was also able to increase the wages of its workers who now have more time to focus their efforts on other aspects of the business including business development, sales and customer support, thereby creating more value for the business and themselves.
